Sacred Valley - Moray - Machupicchu

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco

You will then have the rest of the morning free to rest and enjoy your surroundings at leisure.  Later in the day we will visit a native cultural dance center (Centro Nativo  Qosqo) for a traditional  show of dance and theatre.
We spend the night in the city of Cusco

Day 2: Sacred valley - Moray

sacred valle camping moray machupicchuAfter breakfast we leave Cusco and make our way to Pisac, the gateway to the Sacred Vally of the Incas. Once in Pisac we will explore the huge artisan market and experience all of its joyful colour and rich traditions.  We will have lunch in Urubamba, a short drive from Pisac and then continue on to OLLANTAYTAMBO.
The city of Ollantaytambo is best known for its ruins, and for the spot where the Inca emperor Manco Inca was able to defeat the Spanish in a set-piece battle.
We will then make our way to the town of Chequereq and begin the walk to our camp site. We traverse some impressive countryside and will reach elevations up to 3750 m. We will pass through some very diverse vegetation where abundant bird life can be found, grazing pastures for cattle and vast areas of agriculture. Crops like corn, potatoes, beans, barley and many other vital varieties that sustain the local population will be seen.
Dinner will be a spectacular fair of typical Peruvian cusuine called Pachamanca. Its name comes from the Quechua language: "Pacha", earth, and "Manca", cooking pot or kettle, which translates as "earth oven". Widely used in times of the Incas, Pachamanca is more than just a method of cooking; it's a celebration of the source of fertility and life. The Pachamanca oven was discovered to shorten the cooking time at high altitudes by locking in the pressure and heat.  It also gives the food a unique flavor.
We will spend the night snuggled around a bonfire or if the weather dictates in our tents.

Day 3: Moray - Maras

sacred valle camping moray machupicchuThe second day begins with a 45 minute walk to the archaeological center of Moray. About 6.9 km (4.3 miles) to the southeast of the town of Maras, Moray, is a unique group of archaeological remains, that are interestingly only found in this region. It’s a series of circular terraced platforms that are staggered about 1.80mt (6ft) apart for a total depth of about 150m (492ft) with a temperature variance of up to 15 ºC (59 ºF) from top to bottom.
Used for purposes of agriculture, the varying temperature range allowed the Inca to plant many different varieties within their own microclimate. The whole terraced construction is over a natural rocky formation, very porous, that provides excellent drainage and allows the area to be irrigated without concern of flooding. Due to its climatic conditions and other characteristics, it was obviously an important centre of domestication, acclimatization and hybridization of wild vegetable species that were modified or adapted for human consumption.
Then it’s off to the Salt Mines of Maras, the most important salt mines in the region.
An impressive complex of natural salt production that has been exploited since Incan times and during the Vice-regency was the largest salt producer of the southern highlands. The salt was used to exchange for other types of produce during the reign of the Incas and today for its economic value; these salt mines are a wonderful spectacle as you drop into the region from the high valley plains above. Mules still carry the salt that is extracted from the natural salt mines and with luck we will see this first hand. The salt mines are 3000 small pools approximately 5m² that are filled with salt water (the water rises from a natural source located at the top of the complex) and is left basking in the hot sun until the water evaporates and the salt remains. This process takes around one month until it reaches the required volume: 10 cm (4 inches) high. Then, the salt is ground and packed to be sent to the regional markets.
Our next destination is the train station at Ollantaytambo where we will board the train to Aguas Calients.  One of the most spectacular train journeys in southern Peru, we’ll finds ourselves creeping along the dense jungle valley floor as huge mountains either side stretch skyward.  Once in the township we will find our hotel and bed down for the night.

Day 4: Machupicchu

sacred valle camping moray machupicchuAfter breakfast in Aguas Calientes our guided tour will commence at 6:00 a.m. and will last approximately 2 1/2 hours. We arrive very early at the sanctuary of Machu Picchu so we can witness the dawn bathe the mountain with its first rays.  With guide in tow, we will extensively explore the site including all of the main constructions, Temples, Towers, the Solar Clock or Intiwatana, etc.  At the base of Machu Picchu, several thousand feet below, the raging waters of the mighty Urubamba River can be seen winding its path through the Sacred Valley. You will be free until 11:30 am to explore and enjoy the site at leisure. As you sit and marvel at the work of this ancient culture you will have time to absorb and reflect on the undeniable energies that will connect you to this sacred place.
We return to Cusco for dinner in the Plaza de Armas in a very popular restaurant that also provides traditional entertainment.

Day 5: Cusco - Lima

After breakfast in your hotel you will be free to explore the city one last time before being transferred to the airport in Cusco.
